E. Waldo Ward & Son was founded in 1891, when Edwin Waldo Ward, Sr. arrived in Seirra Madre, California. Ward was an importer of luxury foods, but his dream was to start his own family business producing English-style orange marmalade.
He managed to secure two orange trees of the variety necessary for producing English marmalade. These trees were native to Spain. Ward planted the two trees on his ranch and started a grove that grew to over 600 trees. After retiring from his job in 1915, Ward concentrated on perfecting his marmalade recipe and finally launched his dream company in 1918.
Ward’s marmalades quickly became a sought-after gourmet food item. Ward jams were served in the luxury dining cars on trains and in upscale restaurants across the country. Eventually, the company expanded its food business until marmalades represented only 10% of the company’s sales. E. Waldo Ward & Son now also offers fruits syrups, fruit butters, brandied fruits, olives, and oils. Their products are delicious on their own or as quality ingredients in recipes for freshly baked goods.
E. Waldo Ward’s slogan is simply “The Best,” and that is certainly reflected in the company’s commitment to using only high-quality ingredients. The jams manufactured for Polly’s Pies contain pure cane sugar, not corn syrup, and only the freshest fruit.
